What are the options for a more fire resistant garage?

You will notice that after the Canberra fires many steel clad garages were totally destroyed as the heat from adjacent fuel buckled the sheeting which eventually exposed the contents to the flames.

Masonry garages generally faired much better if they had a steel roof and not so well where the roof was tiled.  Unfortunately the cost of a brick garage is around three times that of a steel garage so many people will rebuild in steel.

If you a looking for a cheaper option than brick that is relatively attractive and more fire resistant you might consider a steel framed garage clad with 75 mm thick Hebel panels.  These (Aerated Autoclaved Concrete) panels are light weight, extremely fire resistant and relatively easy to install.  If you want to see a full scale example of a completed garage we suggest you visit Totalspan Garages at 21 Whyalla St Fyshwick (Ph 62804010) where you can get a quote on a steel or Hebel Garage.

If you are considering doing something like this yourself be careful to have the footings correctly designed as Hebel blocks are as stiff as brickwork and cannot be constructed on a normal garage slab.

For a picture of a Hebel garage under construction see below.
