Detailed History of Employment
1983 – 1987
Employed by the then Department of Transportation and later Department of Housing and Construction as a Graduate Engineer, Mal worked in the Aerodromes and Roads Coastal Engineering sections in Canberra for his first two years after graduating. Work in these positions included pavement designs for flexible and rigid pavements and later the design of jetties and navigational aides for navel facilities. After promotion Malcolm elected to move to the Building Services Division in 1985 where he worked on building projects as part of a multidisciplinary team until his departure in 1987.
1987 – 1989
Mal commenced work with Maunsell & Partners in 1987 where he was based in Canberra but worked on a diverse range of structural engineering projects in various capital cities throughout Australia. Work undertaken included detailed design of bridges in Australia and overseas as well as the structural design of a number of industrial complexes.

Mal also completed a Masters Degree in Engineering Science from NSW University by studying outside work hours through the Australian Defence Force Academy where he was admitted as a civilian to their postgraduate training program. The Masters Degree was awarded by NSW University in 1988
1989-1995
Mal commenced work with Northrop Consultants in 1989 where he was involved in the design of many commercial projects from warehouses to office blocks. Responsibilities included writing all of the office design software and standardizing office design procedures. Mal consolidated his experience in building design and refined his expertise in prestressed concrete and tilt-up construction.
Whilst at Northrop Consultants Mal also took some time off to lecture university students studying architecture at Canberra University. These lecture covered the use of timber concrete and steel outlining the applications and limitations of each material and the relative costs to the environment.

When he left in 1995 Mal had been an Associate for two years.
1995 Mal joined Hughes Trueman Ludlow in 1995 to manage their structural design section in Canberra. After designing projects in both ACT and Sydney he left to join Taylor Thomson Whitting one year later.
1996-2001 Mal commenced work with Taylor Thomson Whitting in 1996 where he generally carried projects through from preliminary design to completion.

2001
Mal left TTW in early September of 2001 to start his own firm “Advanced Structural Designs”. Mal’s first job was as Structural Engineer on Canberra’s Reconciliation Place in the Parliamentary Zone where he designed the structural aspects of the concrete work, landscape architecture and exhibits.
